UX : Three categories of users

A basic funda of user experience.

A Website should address three different categories of users:

  1. First-time User :
  2. No examples for this, for sure you might have been a first-time user to some or the other websites.  There is a first time for everything :)

  3. Intermediate User :
  4. Visits websites in a regular interval, say in 10 days or in a month .

Take an example of a Travel website, which enables you to plan your trips and book your tickets. If you travel twice in a month, you know where to input data and where the system will show status message.

Still, there can be changes made to the interface gradually by the owner, for a better business. So when you visit the site next time, you may panic. Still you will be able to pick up the process flow easily, since you are used to the process. Anyways business people won’t make it a huge difference and make it hard for their customers.

  5. Expert User :
  6. Visits websites daily or once in two days.

Portals, Email Inbox will be best examples.

In these interfaces also, as this is the next level of intermediate users, you know how it works. You will know each and every corner of the interface. Where you have navigation links, where you have a settings link etc. While you design such an interface don’t give information not essentially required.
